A GRAND NATIONAL ~ A 1~5~8 Acrostic Rhyming Sonnet !

BRIAN & ANGELA

LADIES DAY AT THE GRAND NATIONAL ~ FRIDAY

A FINE "SPRING QUARTETTE !"

A STEEPLECHASE  revered worldwide

GRAND NATIONAL ~ A perfect ride !

RIDERS  the Thrills (not the Spills) enjoy

ALWAYS  went when I was a BOY

NEAR  Beechers Brook I always stand

DETERMINED  to see them all safely land !

NOTHING  compares with National ~ OK

A GREAT  group of Fillies on LADIES DAY !

THE NAMES  of the Horses displayed with aplomb

"I JUST KNOW"  fancied ~ twenty-five to one

ON GRAND NATIONAL Day ~ everyone has a flutter

NO HORSE  is unbacked ~ betting slips in the gutter

AT LAST  it's all over ~ and nobody died

LIVERPOOL basks in her PRESTIGE & PRIDE  ~ AMEN

Thanks for reading ~ comments welcome ~ Love BRIAN XOX

I don't gamble for personal reasons but everyone asks me

"How do I pick a Winner ?"   With 40 Runners the odds are

long so millions who don't normally "do the Horses" do

have a flutter on the National !  The answer is  "Use a PIN"

It is a very open race and anyone can win !  All Three Lady

Jockeys  have good pedigree ~ Could this be Lady's Year ?

Form of course is an indicator which puts Animals at the

top of the list ANIBALE FLY (11 : 1) and BLAKLION (12 : 1)

and TIGER ROLL (12:1)   at least one of them should be "In

the Frame" at the finish. Jockeys & Trainers are important too !

RED is a winning colour (remember RED RUM a Triple Winner !)

This year ~ Captain Redbeard (16:1) & Vieux lion Rouge (33:1)

Then there are records @ 17  James Bowen on SHANTOU FLYER

(33:1) could become the Youngest Winner !  Most people pick by

instinct and association !  Folk from the Lake District will pick

LORD WINDERMERE (50:1) and the Dutch ~ The Dutchman

(25:1) and folk with Air Force connections and Ornithologists

BLESS THE WINGS (66:1).  My Neighbour ~ who does the Horses

every week advises:  Pick the FIVE you fancy and place £20 each

way on each Horse and you can't lose ~ perhaps !  BRIAN XOXOX

A great rhyming acrostic Brian! I also enjoyed the notes at the end. Glad you have the weather for it! Hope you enjoy yourself if you go--Sister Christina

Thanks CHRIS ~ It is the best STEEPLECHASE in the World ~ Can't go this year (500 mile round trip there and back) we are both on duty @ Church tomorrow ! It is on TV in about 2 hours and Angela & Ruth & David and a few others are coming round to my Flat for a Grand National Buffet & Drinks ! None of us gamble but some have a Horse in their Charity Sweep (for the local Hospice) ! You pay £5 but don't win any thing 40 x £5 = £200 = $270 goes to the Hospice but you have a Horse to follow ! Angela has BLAKLION ~ Ruth has SEE YOU AT MIDNIGHT ~ Davis has ROAD TO RICHES ~ I just sent a Donation ~ Elders & Gideons don't GAMBLE !
Loved your poem and have commented ~ Straight from your Loving Heart ~ AMEN ! Hugs in the SPIRIT ~ BRIAN @@@@@@@

Erm, says I, just having signed an online petition to 'promote setting up of an independent group to look into welfare of horses'. It's a terrible race in some ways. But I see what you mean - thrills not spills.

Those of us born & bred in Liverpool will always defend the Aintree GN ! Just as Spaniards defend Bull Fighting and Landed Conservatives Fox Hunting etc. I essence it was a very fine race and (if you watched it) you will have noticed that ~ even when Horses lose their Riders ~ they still carry on JUMPING ! Only 12 (out of 38) finished but of those that fell they are all OK and back in their Stables ! The Jockeys who fell are also OK ~ just cuts & bruises ! The Nanny State would ban ROCK CLIMBING ~ PONY TRECKING ~ FORMULA ONE (cruelty to Racing Cars) etc. Because of the same lobby there are no ANIMAL ACTS in Circuses etc. I love all Animals but some laws are silly and draconian ! They still have (clansdestine) Cock Fights in Kentucky and they voted 65% for Trump ! Yours BRIAN

Oohhh yes, must not hurt racing cars. They will be all worn out going at that speed for so long - the cars I mean! heehee. I\'m a bit \'nanny-like\' then. I also signed a petition to help ban animal acts in circuses! But they pick out the worst circuses. I cannot abide animals being used in experiments though.
I would join \'Be kind to lamp-posts\' committee. Poor things, out in all weathers, no one takes them a cup of tea or a blanket to keep them warm at night, never ever moving from their place, etc. Much more of this and we\'ll go nutty! lol.

A church was a bit crafty, saying 'Erm, we're not raffling on a Sunday, but all donations gratefully received!' (Of course they are. heehee).

Another fine work and interesting notes to accompany it - thanks Brian.

          • BRIAN & ANGELA

Thanks MICHAEL ~ It was a very fast and exciting Race and TIGER ROLL (one of those I mentioned) was a worthy winner but almost pipped at the post by PLEASANT COMPANY ! Actually being there is an experience YOU NEVER FORGET ! Yours BRIAN Although only 12 horses ~ with their riders ~ finished out of 38 ~ Of those that fell all recovered and their Jockeys only suffered scratches & bruises ~ OK

            • Michael Edwards

It certainly was a cliff hanger of a finish.

              Mio Caro Amico BRIAN,
              Buon divertimento!
              Have a great time ...
even if you’re just watching it on tv! Like the Kentucky Derby...I watch it on tv! Can’t go to Kentucky every year! I enjoyed the read!
              Grazie!
              Un Abbraccio e Baci...
              ~Laura~

              • BRIAN & ANGELA

GRAZIE ~ LAURA ~ Cara Amica Mia ! It was a great race and a photo finish between TIGER ROLL (who won ~ great name) and PLEASANT COMPANY ! Only 12 out of 38 starters finished but there were no serious injuries to Horses or Jockeys ~ AMEN Baci e Abbracci e Amore ~ ANGELA & BRIAN XOX Liverpool ~ Home of the GN is 250 miles from Essex and UK Roads are always congested ! B.

                • Laura🌻

                  Yes, super names!
                  Baci per te ed Angela!

I too do not gamble but Grand National is different and in the past I have had a flutter, win or lose it didn't change my life at all.
It is a great race and as Michael said it was a cliffhanger of a race at the end.

                  • BRIAN & ANGELA

THANKS ANDY ~ I agree the GRAND NATIONAL is different especially for BRITS ! Many places of employment have a SWEEPSTAKE (£1 a ticket and every one draws at random !) The winner gets the whole £40 ! The idea is that "You have a Horse" which adds excitement to the race when you watch it ! If you picked up TIGER ROLL you scooped the Jackpot ! One of the other favourites BLAKLION fell at the First ~ depended which BIG CAT you backed ! C'est les Chevaux ! A beautiful day and (in some respects ) a Perfect Race spoilt by too many early fallers ! Yours BRIAN
