Tune: Servant Song

('Brother, sister, let me serve you')

1 Peter 5 v.5-11

********

Subject yourselves to each other

To each sister, each brother

And be clothed with humility

God resists the proud, so be

And He gives grace to the humble

Therefore humble yourselves all

Under God's mighty hand, so He

May exalt in due time, see

Casting upon Him all your care

For He cares for you e'erwhere

Be sober and be vigilant

Wary of evil intent

For your adversary, devil

As roaring lion does prowl

Walks about, seeking whom he may

Devour and turn away

Resist him steadfast in the faith

Realising lies he saith

And know that the same afflictions

Are share by all faithful ones

But God, he us called, He all grace

Called us to glory, His face

Shall we see eternally through

Christ Jesus, His mercies new

After you have suffered a while

God make you perfect, no guile

Shall stablish, strengthen, settle you

To Him glory ever due

You being sober there (verse 3?). Just call me. I'll pop round and add water to your tipple!

I hope he told them to clothe themselves in more than just humility Orchi....... the nights get cold........jokes aside, good read! Beautiful music!

Oohh yes, well it says a cloke of humility I think. We'll be feeling humble if wearing nothing but humility. I'm not averse to religious or spiritual humour. Of course it crosses the line if it's blasphemous! ooh.

I got a story to chill ya bones. Around 320AD in some freezing country in Armenia, 40 believers were made to freeze to death naked all night. A soldier took the place of one of them, who hopped into a too-hot bath instead, but perished with the shock of it! They had no clokes on.(stet).

God has to have a sense of humor unless he's a Calvinist........

          • Lorna

My goodness - is that TRUE? What a story!

            • orchidee

There's some stiff and starchy church places, ya know. Don't laugh in them. Don't even sneeze in them, or you'll be 'tut-tutted' All nice and religious though. I doubt anyone will actually SAY 'Oh shut up!'

              • Lorna

Why don't they leave it up to God to say shut up? Maybe he doesn't really mind..........

                • orchidee

Yes, a true story Lorna, from Armenia, one freezing night centuries ago. One poor chap did not become a martyr, but perished anyway. The sudden change in temperature was too much when he jumped in the hot bath. It's hideous - the next morning they were burnt. Some were frozen solid but still alive. (See Forty Martyrs of Sebaste online). And the next cheery thing......

                  • Lorna

Oh thank you for that! I'll look it up just to start my day on a cheery note...... maybe it inspired the holocaust............

It was a tad chilly.... as English stiff-upper lips would say!

Sobriety is the norm with you putting water in my scotch!!

The clip rattles on at a cracking pace. Too fast really. It rubbishes the hymn, I think.

To be humbled is to experience humility.
