Rare Day.

Goldfinch60

We sit at the table drinking our coffee,

Talking to each other with love and laughter.

My back is to the wall,

So I look around the coffee bar,

Looking at all the people.

All are talking with each other,

As my wife and I are.

There is a lone lady,

But she smiles as she drinks her coffee

And reads her paper.

Then the reality of this moment hits me,

It is so unusual.

All are looking at each other,

Smiling, laughing and talking,

Talking a skill that seems to be lost,

And there is not a ‘phone or pad to be seen.

Such a rare day,

Such a rare day indeed.

  • Comment from author about the poem: This was true. I couldn't believe it! We went to our normal coffee bar, sat drinking our coffee and didn't see one mobile 'phone or pad. The music "Take Five" by the Dave Brubeck Quartet was also played that day in the background. The Album "Time Out" on which is to be found came out in July 1959, I was ten at the time and this album has been with me ever since. I have been fortunate enough to see Dave Brubeck live, a wonderful musician.

Such a rare event although we go to a hotel for coffee with proper waiters and starched table cloths, which is frequented by the 'older' generation very few of whom ever use these darn machines. It is a bit 'snobby' though and people keep to themselves.so

      • Goldfinch60

It is rare as in the place we go, which serves wonderful coffee, there are normally some on their 'phones but the staff and the people that go there are all very pleasant.

Yes, reminds me of a day in 1066 when we were in some café having a cuppa together. A fine write Gold.

wait like 1066 like the year?

          • Goldfinch60

Unfortunately we had to wait five hundred years for our coffee.

Hi Lemons Poetry, yes Orchi and I have been around for millennia, we used to have dinosaurs as pets. As for 1066, the year, it was Orchi that asked Harold to look up in the sky, if he had not said that British history would have been so much different.

Thanks ANDY ~ DAVE BRUBECK ~ Cool JAZZ ~ muted and ideal background MUSIC for a "quiet coffee" Just as we re requested in "Concert" to silence our mobiles (I don't have one !) it should be the same in "Coffee Bars" and Restaurants etc . Love the genteelness of you poem ~ reminds me of the PUMPHOUSE @ BATH ~ All phones in silent mode ! there are lots of Spiritual poems Today ~ Please check mine ~ "POWER OF THE CROSS" ~ Yours BRIAN

Maybe the sheriff confiscated them - like the old West where they took the guns when folks came into town....... good idea! Fabulous music - they seemed to use this theme a lot in older movies I remember.....

                  • Goldfinch60

                    Thank you Lorna.
It is a great piece of music and became a ‘pop’ hit in the early sixties.

I am a fan David Brubeck. I like, 'Take Five'. They have a nice reggea version of it. It is the same song. Only, they changed the name to, 'The Russians Are Coming. I don't know why, but it is just like, 'Take Five', with a reggea twist. You should listen to it.
                    Persistence is key
