Tune: Hursley
('Sun of my soul, thou Saviour dear')
Hebrews 11 v.32-40
*******
They who in faith in days gone by
Here let their wondrous deeds be told
Grant Lord we their faith follow thus
In our daily walk us enfold
Through faith they did subdue kingdoms
Wrought righteousness, did good to all
Obtained promises, stopped the mouths
Of lions, their raging did stall
They quenched the violence of fire
Escaped the edge of the sword drawn
Out of weakness they were made strong
Waxed valiant in battle borne
They turned to flight the enemies
Of the armies, gained victory
Women received their dead to life
In God all their faith was, now see
And other had trial of cruel
Mockings and scourgings, yes even
Bonds of imprisonment, some stoned
Some sawn asunder, tempted then
Some slain with sword, some wandering
In sheepskins, goatskins, destitute
Afflicted, tormented were such
The Lord God by faith their pursuit
The world was not worthy of them
They wandered in deserts, mounts, dens
Cave of the earth, remote places
Woodlands and glades and leafy fens
These all had obtained good report
Through faith, yet did not he promise
Obtain, for God some better thing
Had for us, that we should not miss
'Tis that they, those of faith of old
Should not without us perfect be
But we too included, our faith
That with us they made complete, see

- Comment from author about the poem: A hymn-poem in 8888 metre. Only the second and fourth lines of each stanza rhyme. Maybe this gives some answer towards 'Why do bad things happen to good people?'

I feel this shows ways that faith is demonstrated. Not only in 'nice' ways, when all may be cosy, when it's easy to have faith then. But also in seemingly 'bad' things, even to martyrdom in ghastly ways.
Faith is a variety of things Orchi, as you quite correctly say.
Thanks Gold.
Thanks STEVE ~ beautiful HYMN for SUNDAY and a challenging paraphrase on Hebrews ! The phrase "Of whom the World was not Worthy" is true today of CHRISTIAN Workers in our own Community. When I look at the wonderful People GOD has sent into our Town ~ to serve in the Churches ~ and YMCA etc it stimulates me to be more active & sacrificial for the LORD # Thanks for sharing ~ AMEN ~ Yours BRIAN
Thanks Brian. Me singing is 'worthy' for a film, where two cats are fighting! lol
Fine work O
