PERCEPTION

PERCEPTION

Make America Great Again

Is seen by some as a false refrain

for it raises the question that must be asked:

‘Was America great in the past?

I too may be in trouble with this response!
It was probably great before we English landed on its shores in 1620.

    • Michael Edwards

Darn it - yes you might be right there

On a serious note the mantra implies two contentious thoughts:

America was great in the past
      America isn't great now.

Was you with us M. when Gold and I landed there in 1620?
Is this similar to 'Good Morning' and the reply 'What's good about it?!'

      • Michael Edwards

I was already there - I flew there by Bynotsoeasyjet'

Did the plane have a roof on those cheap trips, or was it like some buses - open-top for better sight-seeing?!

          Michael,
          This is a ā€œhotā€ topic!
Personally, America has always been great for me! Iā€™m grateful for all the wonderful opportunities it has offered me and my family!

          Beautiful flowers!

I'd go along with all of that Brian great geography, great in the arts and other achievements (although on a per capita basis no different to many others) but there is also the political side which I guess I had in mind. Believe me I have no strong views one way or the other but when I see a statement being made I question the actual words used - I suppose that's one of the problems of being a wordsmith.

It needs saying. Nothing bears looking at too closely......... Full of opportunities so that is/was good for the huddled masses. Then they "made it" and lost humility. Full of "might is right" which is/was bad. Ask the poor Indian tribes. Also this country has had very little in the way of humbling moments on its home ground (unlike Europe). The reaction to 9/11 was to me over the top and exploited as if no one else in the world had ever experienced anything like it.... wonder how we would have responded to day and night bombing for months on end......... Trump is a symptom...... let's see if we can right ourselves by getting rid of him.

            • Michael Edwards

I have a lot of sympathy for what you say Lorna but I wouldn't wish to take it further than that - my own country also has so much to answer for.

            • (That\'s all I\'m Telling You)

              Well done, it's great.
Really makes you think about the 9/11
              Thanks for sharing this

Thanks G - there are some great comments from others on this one.

Yes the word "again" begs a question here Michael -and I agree it opens a hot topic. Love the flowers.

It certainly provoked much comment - thanks Fay.

Maybe Trump is the first prominent U.S. leader to actually acknowledge that America has 'lost' something and he wants to re-dress that.
Certainly we are led to believe that in a lot of countries the U.S. is regarded with scorn. If he is able to change this then that alone will be a move for the betterment of America. Certainly a move in the right direction anyway.
But hey, i'm only a Brit.

                  • Michael Edwards

You could well be right but Trump. it seems to me, is actually having an adverse effect when it comes to improving US standing in the eyes of the world.

Trump is a horrific joke come true. He was featured in cartoons decades ago as president! As a joke! I CANNOT believe they made that moron the president! He's practically illiterate. Have you listened to him speak when he's not quoting a speech he's memorized that someone else wrote?! America used to be great in several ways but there have been several prominent people admit that we've lost a lot of what made it great. It's sad to think that with all the advancements we have made, this is the mess that we are leaving our children. Btw, the natives were horrendously treated and many still are. Although the government, has over time, given them certain rights and benefits to attempt to make up for stealing so much from them in the past. (Too little, too late if you ask me) I have native great grandparents and some of the stories I've heard are truly horrific. You've really started something this time Michael!! Lots of comments and opinions. Well, you've gotten us all thinking!

                    • Michael Edwards

I can only comment as an outsider looking in and without any inside knowledge but I must say that he is seen by the rest of the world as a complete buffoon. And yes he does come across as being completely illiterate - he certainly has no ability to use the language and speaks like a child. All this does America no good at all. So in summary I go along with all you say and really feel for the American people. You deserve so much better..
