PAWNS (eight) CASTLES (two) BISHOPS (two) KING QUEEN
The QUEEN is the games most valuable piece !
SHE can move diagonally or she .......
Can move horizontally ~ Bishops can
Move diagonally and Castles can
Move horizontally ~ Knight's have own move
And can jump other pieces ~ EXCITING !
PAWNS can move forward only ~ Two squares
First move ~ and one thereafter ! If they cross
Their opponents base line ~ they can transform
Into any piece and attack the KING
I always carry a CHESS SET with me !

My DAD taught me to play CHESS when I was SEVEN and
we had a CHESS club @ Secondary School (age 11) We
played matches against other Schools. Girls are good at
CHESS because they can multi-task (think ahead !) CHESS
is relatively easy ~ once you learn the Rules and play (and
win !) a few games. Then you have a FRIEND for life !
THE MUSICAL really is about CHESS and is about a World
Championship between the USA and Russia in the Italian
Town of MERANO. Florence is the American's "Second" and
she falls in Love with the Russian who defects to the WEST.

A fine write Brian. I found the knights/horses the most difficult. Also castles might be called rooks.
I not got the hang of the 'castling the King' move. Do you know it?

Thnaks STEVE ~ I've added the anthem from CHESS by JOSH GROGAN ~ awesome ~ please check. Of course as in every thing in Life & Love there are addenda to the basics ~ which of course your opponent knows ! Castling is one of them and the Pawn "en passant" move. These are all explained n Chess Manuals. In the YOKO ONO exhibition there is an ALL WHITE Chess Game. Both sides identical WHITE it is an ANTI-WAR protest. And of course it is impossible to continue after a few moves and you have to call a TRUCE which is the objective. Some elaborate JADE CHESS SETS are worth millions ~ keep looking in Boot Sales & Junk Shops ~ BRIAN Your Check Mate !
Now that's got to be my sign to have one in my house, it's been on my mind for years that the kids should know how.

I love the game too and used to play as a schoolboy. A good chess set can also be a work of art worthy of display in anyone's home.
Yes INDEED Mike ~ I have always loved chess and still play. My ONYX set is on permanent display on a Coffee Table and often results in a GAME. Because TEMPUS FUGIT faster these days ~ we often play 30 minute chess and if we haven't reached check mate the one with the most POINTS (each piece has a relative value) wins. You will note I have changed my NAME to BRIAN & ANGELA and we now have two Doves in our LOGO ! When we have THREE you will know I have jumped the GUN ! Thanks for your comment ~ BRIAN & ANGELA
I love chess. It is a great pass time that keeps you thinking. I have a nice wooden chess set on my dining room table. I try to teach my niece and nephew the game, but my nephew does not really care for it. In all my twenty years of playing the game, I never understood the castle and king switch.

THANKS FRIEND~ Yes it is a very absorbing Game that can be played an understood anywhere in the World ~ AMEN. Castling is a black art but like Diplomacy ~ you don't have to know when and how to use it ! In the Wolf Cubs (Beavers) and Brownies (Rainbows) they now have a CHESS BADGE I help the Leaders and go in and teach them ! I too have always been able to play chess but my favourite board game is backgammon. Good write Brian.

The line in the BALLAD \"My Lands only borders ~ lie around my Heart\" is his explanation for his defection to the USA from Russia and his love for Florence who is American.
