What makes a person, a person?

I think the idea of consciousness, or the ability to think about things actively to make decisions, makes a person a person.
we can certainly be defined by a name. or a label (labelling theory is quite fascinating!). this can sometimes feel too limiting. or feel not fitting enough.
so the question is tricky, and its one many have been trying to explain away for centuries. thus I pose a question in return, does this act of inquiry make us human?
