One Dark Night.

The road is before me,

Darkness has fallen.

I creep into the shadows,

Hide my twisted mind

As they pass me by,

Not seeing me.

I watch them smile,

That smile will soon be gone

When they hear me,

Hear me creeping behind them!

They turn round!

I am not there!

Back into the shadows I go.

They move on I follow,

I move closer,

They hear me once more,

Turn, and I am there!

But they look through me,

Through me into the darkness,

The darkness of their lives.

The lives they thought were good,

But all they see when they turn

Are the dark memories

That they have tried to hide,

To hide from their selves,

To hide from others,

But they cannot hide from me.

They will see me one day,

But for the moment

It is not their turn.

The darkness will not overwhelm them

Until they see me,

And when they do,

On that darkest of nights,

It will be too late,

As I will be upon them

When they realise

That I, Death, cannot be denied.

Oooo 'eck - I was bursting for the loo when I got out of bed this morning so I know I'm still here - not caught up with me yet.

      • Goldfinch60

That is my answer as well Michael when people say "How are you?" I reply "Well I got up this morning so all is fine"

        • Michael Edwards

It's when you get out of bed and don't want the loo that you need to start worrying. 😉

Nice one! Yes, there are only two certainties in life - birth and death. Surprising to young people, many older folk are not afraid of their death. Actually how they die is a different matter though.
I don't think i would like to be scared into death by the death character in your poem.

That is so true da, most people that I have spoken to are not afraid of death but they are afraid of how they die.
I will be out in the shadows tonight, be careful.

            An awesome scary write!
This reminded me of an old soap opera my mom used to watch...

            “DARK SHADOWS”

I will try to avoid the shadows...
            just for tonight!

My love to Joyce and you!

Death is always around us, but not for us yet.
