AND THE PAST TENSE IS: AWAKE

Michael Edwards

AND THE PAST TENSE IS: AWAKE

I’m told the past tense of asleep is slept

but that’s a contention I cannot accept

I hope you don’t think I’m being a bore

but a past tense is something that’s happened before

so may I suggest it must be a mistake

for before I was asleep I was wide awake.

'course you were wide awake - you were too tense.....

Never saw you as a political cartoonist, Michael. What's with Gartree Prison...?

    • Michael Edwards

Cartoon done for a local magazine - huge new extension to the prison after many protests and fears of disruption for the surrounding villages, The helicopter refers to a break out by helicopter a few years back which hit the headlines around the world.

Good for you. Is this a one off or a regular syndicated activity in magazines over there?

        • Michael Edwards

I'm a regular contributor - usually get asked at the last minute to illustrate an article or as a space filler then its all go to meet printing deadline.

Great to know you continue to contribute to the local debate, Michael,

Yes I slept Michael but I am awake this morning and every day I awake shows it will be a good day.

Yes its good to wake up - why do we say that? We go downstairs so shouldn't it be wake down?

A most clever write using the ideosynchrocies in the language. Short and amusing it gave me a smile.

Love playing with the language. I paste a comment made earlier when replying to argios: Recently watched a video of a British comic who did a routine pronouncing all the letters in a word - it was hilarious - pronouncing ever letter try saying 'tonight the knight will fight'

This poem's conversational and relatable tone, combined with the philosophical musings on time and consciousness, adds to its depth. Your work encourages us to think critically about language and the ways in which we describe our experiences and states of being.

An observation on the strange language we share. Recently watched a video of a British comic who did a routine pronouncing all the letters in a word - it was hilarious - pronouncing ever letter try saying 'tonight the knight will fight'

Oh yes, I’ve seen such a clip somewhere as well!

LOL so damn clever 🤣 I'll be back later 💜

You're hilarious! From the delightfully sarcastic accompanying image to the discussion capably rhymed and expressed, you're too fun, Sir. Beautifully rendered with excellent humor and a waltzing poignancy, thank you for sharing.

You really are too kind - Im writing more light verse these days - if you dont know him look up the British punk poet John Cooper Clark - he can be great fun with his heavy laconic Liverpool accent.

                        Ooh, shall do! Thank you!
