I was once like you
Wanting that high
Old enough to know better
But young enough to ignore why
My generation had all the stuff
We smoked, snorted, drank and took pills
Thought we knew it all
But what our dumb asses didn’t know
Was that stuff kills
“Oh, that won’t happen to me”, you say
Till your life’s hanging by a thread
With your buddy by your side
And you realize he’s dead
Life plays hard ball
When you don’t listen the first time
Slip just once more
Just might be the end of the line
Life is a gift to all of us
Choose carefully how you dance
Screw that up
You might not get another chance
So be thankful for your life
Live for your smiles tomorrow
Don’t be the source
Of anyone’s sorrow
Next time you want to
Chase that lie
Remember it’s a road to nowhere
A road where you might die

- Comment from author about the poem: I didn't drink much in my younger days. My only vice was smoking pot, but even that I look back on with much regret. You don't see your life pass by while you're high. But it's too late, you can't get those years back to do over. The song by Paul McCartney's band Wings is a perfect example of that.

Me neither, I thought I was on the fringes, that I was safe, well safer than the rest of the mindless mob. But not unlike like the brilliant Sun, whose solar flares tongue and lick, I too got singed. Perhaps what we lacked then was an alternative or a strength to stay our course. I really donβt know,ππ»π
Thanks for reading arqios. When we're young, we think we know it all. But we don't know the truth of our own stupidity. We don't know because we don't want to believe we might be our own worst enemy. I finally stopped myself long enough to look at myself from another's perspective and saw the fool I was. I quit smoking pot and made a commitment to not let anything control my mind but me. But...I lost the years that I was smoking it, and I missed the chance to make those years a better me.
So goes the saying: βwisdom comes with age.β ππ»ποΈ
And with age comes hindsight. π
So true. And many are the regrets that flower my garden ππ»ποΈ

Fine words AP. In all my life I have never knowingly been near any drugs except tobacco and alcohol. I can remember the sixties and there is a saying that if you can remember the sixtgies you weren't there. LOL
Andy
Yes I have heard that saying too Andy, and I remember the 60s very well. Thanks for reading and commenting. π
A very positive and true message to the young delivered here, though part of being young is not listening or taking advice, means it will not be headed, and we all did the same when we were young, enjoyed the read
Thanks Poetic, you are most certainly correct. Some of my generation were smart to not indulge in alcohol and drugs, I wish I could say I was one of them. Unfortunately I was much like the majority of my age group where having fun took precedence over many more important things.
You are very welcome
All substances have their side effects good and bad. Some we label as contraband and others as medication the only difference what money makes legal and doctors authorize. Both just as dangerous as the other. Watch out what you take. Enjoyed the poem
Thanks you so much soren. The phrase comes to mind, "If I knew then what I know now". ππ
A thought-provoking piece, AP. Nicely done.
Thanks Tom. These days with marijuana legalized here in the US it seems that its no big deal like it was when I was growing up. I look around and wonder how many "stoners" are wandering around with their heads in the clouds. I was one of those "stoners" 45 years ago. π
Powerful and poignant. Excellent work. I've been sober over 2 years now.
Thank you Thomas for reading and the compliment. And congrats on being sober. I know its not an easy accomplishment, but you did it! ππ
