The music sails through me
Like a Spirit from the world,
That world of Jazz,
That world where Chet was found.
A troubled man,
A man whose music speaks to me
Takes me into ‘The Cool’.
His smooth trumpet calls me,
The sounds sibilantly slides though me,
Bringing me to peace.
He did get lost,
Lost to that world of heroin,
But came back,
Came back better, stronger.
The world was at his feet
And his sounds ruled the world.
Then he played “Lets Get Lost” once more,
That final time,
That day he fell,
Fell and was taken from us,
Taken from me.
His legacy lives on,
Lives on in his music.
That music that seems to talk,
Talk to me,
Showing me he is there.
He is alive in his music,
And he is still there for me,
As he always will be.

- Comment from author about the poem: Today 13th May 1988 Chet Baker died, he is my favourite jazz trumpeter (and I say is and not was as to me he is still alive). He went through some bad times with his drub abuse but had started getting things back together Just weeks after delivering a lauded performance with the NDR Big Band and Hannover Radio Orchestra, Chet was found dead outside his Amsterdam hotel in the early hours of May 13, 1988. His second-floor room window was open and drugs were found in his system, although it was never known whether his death was accidental or not. This is the fourth and last of my current music themed poems, for the time being anyway.

Thanks for caring & sharing ANDY ~ nothing like JAZZ to cheer up a wet Saturday afternoon ! CHET BAKER ~ A mean horn. Like so many others Patsy Kline ~ John Lennon ~ Elvis ~ Jim Reeves etc CHET (59) died at least 20 years before his time. Yours BRIAN
So very true, thanks Brian.
Great tribute, you honor him well with your poetry. A very kind thing indeed
Thank you WS, most kind.
I know the revelance you feel toward Jazz . I grew up listening to Benny Goodman , Louis Armstrong , Charlie Parker , Miles Davis etc so I relate to the state of contemplation that Jazz delivers . Your tribute ensures that Chet continues on in memory and actual presence .
Thanks SL, i have been listening to jazz for over sixty years, my dad was a great jazz fan (and classical music) and I was brought up listening to and loving both.
Beautiful write.
Thanks Gino.
