Back in the Sixties.

Goldfinch60

I was there, back in the day,

Those days in the sixties,

Those days before discos,

When groups played on stage

And we all danced.

Danced to songs of the time.

That time when music changed,

And the music changed our lives,

Changed our attitudes,

And led us into a new way,

A new way of enjoyment.

Yes I was there

Dancing the night away,

Until at least ten thirty,

When the last dance was played,

The slow one and I danced close,

Close to the girl I was with.

I would slowly walk her home,

Not wishing to break the spell

Of our time together.

A sweet kiss as we parted,

Complete innocence

Yes I remember the sixties.

Some say that if you remember the sixties

You were not there,

But I was there looking for life,

Not war, not drugs.

I was looking for and found happiness,

Happiness in those times,

When the young people took the country by storm.

The dowdiness of the fifties dispelled,

And changed into the glory of the sixties.

Here I am looking back,

Looking back at those times,

And I find that during that time

I have one thing that has not changed.

On the very rare occasions that I dance

Some fifty plus years later,

I still step to one side,

And then step to the other side,

As I did back in the sixties.

A fine write G/F. Was we both there in the Ten-Sixties? 1066 and all that?! heehee

    • Goldfinch60

We were there in all the sixties, remember that fire you started in London in 1666, I said you shouldn't have lit that match!

    • orchidee

You can confine that Schopen-wotist guy to 1066 - the music of the one you hate to hear!

      • Goldfinch60

You must mean Stockhausen, the one that Sir Thomas Beecham said that he may have trod in sometime.

Goldfinch, every age has its beauty. I agree, the 60's were great, and as far as I am concerned, so were the 70's, 80's, 90's and today. Different times, different enjoyments!

          Very true, thank you.

I rarely look back as it makes me feel a bit melancholic and I still have so much to look forward despite my advanced years - and yet I loved this bit of nostalgic writing - good one G.

I woz only lighting the match to burn some things of the plague from the previous year, then somehow it got out of hand....!

Thanks ANDY ~ my parents remember it well and my Dad always asserts that the best music belonged from the 40's through to the 70's. Thankfully due to remastered CD's us Children of the 80's to the 10's can all enjoy the Beatles ~ Elvis etc ~ but of course only in the MIND and on Film but never alas in the Flesh ~ we can however still see the Stones and (God Forbid) Tony Bennett ~ Great VIDEO and great POEM ~ BRIAN

Thanks Brian, so much music is out there for us.

I loved this GF! Thanks for offering me a peek into the 60's. Because you were not into drugs you actually remember the time, like you said. I am a fan of history. I really enjoyed this write!

              • Goldfinch60

Thank you Christina. There were drugs around but in all my now long life I have never knowingly been near them apart from alcohol and cigarettes. The sixties were a wonderful happy time.

Your statement about being a fan of history made me smile as it made me feel so old. It was like the time I went to the Science Museum in London, I used to be an Analytical Chemist and there they had a room showing all the equipment I used to use in my laboratory - my life now in a museum.

              • Suresh

History is already recording that latter of sixties was a momentous shift in attitudes , when the then generation took over the reigns from antiquated beliefs, and laid the foundation for all generations to follow -

Yes it is romantic to think of our life in the sixties.

                • Goldfinch60

It certainly is Suresh, it was certainly a momentous shift into a more fruitful way of life, I feel honoured to be a part of it if if a tiny part. "MAKE LOVE, NOT WAR".
