Ahh we have to be 'modern I suppose - drums included in worship bands on Sundays, like it or not, in some places!
A guy appeared with a rams-horn once, much to the indignancy of the stuffy vicar at the time. he got banned or something! lol.
Thanks STEVE for your interesting comment. There is a lot in the BIBLE about music and instruments and I guess God want his Church to be both "Anchored to the Rock" and "Geared to the Times" ! You have proved time and again that Hymns Ancient have the best tunes (for congregational singing) and are more theologically correct than Hymns Modern ~ but thank GOD for Graham Kendrick who has the Charles Wesley touch ! Rams Horns are useful for breaking down walls ~ maybe of prejudice ! The trouble with full scale drum kits in Church is that there is no volume control ! We let ours play in a Perspex Bubble ~ we can see him / her but it absorbs 80% of the noise ~ Gene Kruper would turn in his mausoleum ! I think HYMNOLOGY peaked with Charles W ~ but I love NEGRO SPIRITUALS ~ I like my Chariots best when they Swing Low ! BRIAN
Thanks Brian. I'm not against modern, but there are irregular rhythms and tunes to some of them (same as with some oldies too!). Erm, the rams-horn difficulty was that the Vicar seemed to think HE owned the church, I reckon. lol. He, erm, improved somewhat over time. A current Vicar there did not have a dog-collar even - heretical?!
Thanks STEVE ~ We have several Vicars in our extended Family but they are EVANGELICALS and not autocratic ! They do prefer Happy Clappy rather than Ancient. They do have a lot of Teens in their Congregations and the Oldies wear ear plugs ~ Yours BRIAN
Good write and I agree with you that bagpipes are best played far away - the further away the better!
I lie all types of music and k ow quite a lot about it but what I relalise is that the more I get to know about music the more ignorant I realise that I am about it.
Thanks ANDY ~ Of the making of Music there is no end ~ and much practice is weariness of the flesh ! Best to stick to CD's ! I have friends who are professional Classical Musicians and they had to "learn" years of Musical History but do lament that it is impossible to keep up with the Global Expansion of all Musical Genre ~ One is an expert on Baroque Cello Bows another on the use of the Basoon in Jazz and the third on Choral Music in the 21st C. Like scientists (I am an expert on DNA) they have to Major on Minors ~ Yours BRIAN.
Brian I love your Haiku's. We did have drums in the church a long time ago, didn't last though.
Thanks FRED ~ The problem with drums is the volume ~ we let ours play in a perspex BUBBLE and only 20% of the sound escapes. Most Churches have many members 70+ and I see no point in offending them ~ just to be "modern". Our Sunday evening Service is a "drum free zone" and the Hymns are more Ancient than Modern. We have a good cross section of ages in the Morning ~ Kids Teen ~ Adults and 70+ and DRUMS & CLAPPING etc (Free Evangelical) in the evening our Teen go Pentecostal (Dancing in the Spirit) and our congregation (6:30 ~ 8 pm) is all 30+ Yours BRIAN.
Classical guitar has always been a favorite instrument of mine too. Nothing quite like the strings to sooth the soul. I truly enjoyed this fine tribute to the variety of instruments that together bring us so much satisfaction. Well done, Brian!
Thanks LOUIS ~ I have seen John Williams playing "Recuerdos de Alhambra" ~ Awesome. Pleased you liked my comments on the instruments ~ BRIAN
Love your Haiku! In church we still just have an organ. Still stuck with the ancient hymns. On special occasions someone will break out an instrument they play to spice things up but I wish we had a band! I agree violins can be hell in the hands of children! Hugs, Christina
Thanks CHRIS ~ love your comments ! I have mentioned elsewhere that we have the BAND in the Morning and just Organ & Piano in the Evening ! We all suffer in our extended Families from kids murdering a VIOLIN. At least guitars ~ keyboard & pianos are always in TUNE ~ Melodic HUGS ~ BRIAN
Great write
Thanks TONY ~ please check my latest FUSION on Ideal Age ~ BRIAN
Welcome
Great piece to advocate all that's good about music - my favourite instruments: piano and cello.
Thanks MICHAEL ~ My DAD is a Church Organist and an amateur Classical Pianist ~ My Parents have a rosewood upright grand which has a beautiful tone. I play folk guitar ! In my extended Family we have pianists ~ cellists ~ bassoonists ~ clarinetists ~ choir conductors etc. Some are professional classical musicians and earn a crust in London ! Playing a cello is awesome because it has the same shape as the human body and the vibes go right through you ! Pleased you enjoyed my Haiku ~ it was a bit tongue in cheek ! Please check my latest FUSION on Ideal Age ! BRIAN
Any instrument can be played to the glory of God! We sing hymns, but also modern selections. Everything old was once new. Lots of bluegrass where I live. One of our local children was recently on Steve Harvey's show playing with his bluegrass band. Enjoyed you!
