When I was a BOY
And OLD SHEP was a PUP
O'er the hills and the fields we would stray
Just a BOY and his DOG
We were so full of fun
And we grew up so happy ~ that way !
The years took their toll
And OLD SHEP he grew old
Grey hair and his eyes growing dim
Until one day the VET ~ looked at me and said
HANK ~ I can't do no more for him
Now OLD SHEP has gone
Where the Good Doggies go
And no more o'er the hills will we roam
Now he's up in Heaven
Where I'll meet him one day
And again we will both share our HOME

- Comment from author about the poem: Thais was the FIRST PUBLIC APPEARANCE of THE BOY ELVIS (He did sing in Church) and everyone was amazed at his voice ~ even then ! I think every BOY should have a DOG it helps BOYS to grow up and take (some) responsibility. Elvis' childhood was poor (he was born in January 1935) but he always had plenty of LOVE. His family moved to MEMPHIS when he was 14 ~ He drove a truck and never looked back. His legacy is 850 recordings every one perfect and unmistakably FOREVER ELVIS. The King lives in all our lives (at least those who are as old as I am!)
Thanks ANDY ~ Long live the KING ~ People of all ages love ELVIS Even those born long after he had died ! Thanks for your comment ~ BRIAN
A fine write and song Brian.
Thanks STEVE ~ pleased you enjoyed ~ DOGS & BOYS were made for each other ~ BRIAN
I remember the emotion the song evoked Brian - thanks for this reminder of a pet dog's value.
Thanks FAY ~ as you know Pets become an integral and important part of the Family and need to be treated as such 1 I love ELVIS singing "Old Shep" because it is slow full of pathos ~ real Country ~ and a million miles from Jailhouse Rock. ! Yours as ever ~ BRIAN
I never cease to admire the way we humans can get so attached to a dog and a dog to us. Pity you can't say the same about cats . Good write B.
Yes MICHAEL ~ the Human / Dog bond is indeed strange ! My explanation is because they both need each other. Humans (M & F) need "an animal" to PET and Dogs need to be PETTED. So the symbiosis is mutually beneficially. CATS on the other hand are independent ~ aloof ~ individual. Cats need NOBODY ! When you pet a DOG its tail wags with JOY ~ when you try to pet or pat a CAT it JUMPS and evades you ~ unless it needs food ! BRIAN (Felinophile !)
Thanks for that Brian!
THANKS ANGEL ~ Well there has been quite a lot of Poemes Noires recently so i posted a more gentle Ahhhhhhhh type of Poem ~ Pleased you liked it ! Hugs ~ BRIAN.
I know how that is. My mom got a dog a couple years before I was born and she passed in recent years. And when my mom and stepdad divorced we had to leave the new dog with him. I really hope we get another dog soon.
Sincerely, Azuranna
Thanks AZURANNA (love the sound of your full name !) YES people do get very attached to their DOGS ~ Thinking of you ~ hope you get a new pooch soon ! Yours as always ~ BRIAN
A fine tribute, Briansodes! Funny, but I was a minority of one, I suppose, who was never impressed with his singing voice. Go figure!
WHAT LOUIS ? A RANGE OF TWO-AND-A-HALF OCTAVES ~ 850 perfect recordings ~ some good films and also voted in the USA as BEST SINGER of the 20th Century ! What is there not to like about the KING ? Still your Friend ~ BRIAN !
Like I say, a minority for sure, but I've heard many a better pure singing voice. Thanks for your spirited reaction ... no offense intended.
Thanks LOUIS ~ You have to remember he started out as Country ~ so there was always an edge to his voice (like Johnny Cash) which suited Rock & Roll. Dean Martin & Sinatra & Tony Bennett were Italian ~ which helps and Tony (91 and still 100 concerts per year) was trained as a Bel Canto Baritone ! Bing Crosby (b 1903) who stared it all off essentially a smooth voiced Crooner ~ who they all wanted to emulate even Elvis. Two of the purest voices (in my view) were Jim Reeves (who was originally a Baseball Player ~ Alexandria Aces !) and Nat King Cole ~ who had the advantage of being an Afro-American (like Paul Robeson). NKC was primarily a Jazz Pianist but a drunk kept hassling him to sing Sweet Lorraine so he did ! You have to remember these people were Ballad Singers and not Opera Singers like Bryn Tervil ! Two great UK Singers (still going strong) are Tom Jones (Welsh !) and Engelbert Humperdink (English ~ 81 ~ bor in Madras India ~ moved to Leicester aged 10 ~ real name ~ Arnold Dorsey !) I'm just mentioning a few who many consider "purer" than Elvis ~ who would you suggest ? BRIAN
My favorite of all time would be Sarah Briteman. I never tire of listening to her pure, clear vocals, and talk about range! Went to see her once in concert and had an unexplainable, somewhat mystical experience listening to her.
A nice sweet remembrance. I love dogs and cats. Have no one right now. Thinking in getting a dog. Need to decide witch one
