You can say what you want
Call me a nostalgic fool
And I’ll even admit to being
More than a little old school
So the past is where I came from
Couldn’t get here any other way
Some couldn’t care less about the past
But I’m thankful for everyday
I was brought up
To be respectful of others
At least, to those who deserve it
And especially to all our mothers
There comes a time when you see
Through your parents eyes
The hardships of generations before you
Suddenly you see your elders so wise
I learned to work hard
To earn every dime
That nothing in life is really free
And ignorance is just a waste of time
I learned to watch what I say
And when to keep my mouth shut
To resist an urge to swear
Or my mother would spank my butt
Save your pennies young man
Save till you’re old and grey
Because someday you’ll need it
Glad you didn’t squander it away
Contrary to belief
The real world is not always what you see
This ain’t your money for nuthin’
Chicks for free
And what goes around
Usually comes back around
Work hard and earn your weight in pay
Or lie and cheat for just a pound
Do to others as you’d have done to you
For that was always the golden rule
And that’s how it was “Back in the day”
Back in the old school

Loved this piece. I can relate to it since I'm old school too. Great piece.
Thanks AP ~ I was well trained @ Home & School and our "10 Rules in the Scouts" were:
Trusty ~ Loyal ~ Helpful
Brotherly ~ Courteous ~ Kind
Obedient ~ Cheerful ~ Thrifty
Pure in Body & Mind
Very similar to the NINE FRUIT of the SPIRIT ~ Thanks for caring and sharing a great poem for Sunday ! Yours BRIAN
I was in Boy Scouts when young and there was a oath I had memorized then, but can't recall it now. Must be 50 years ago. ; )
It probably went something like this ! " I Promise to do my Duty to God & the Queen at all times and to obey the Scout Law ~ AMEN" The 10 Scout Laws are simplified in my comment above ~ OK ~ BRIAN
Well, you're in England, so your version is different from our here in the states. And like I said, I can't remember how it went after 50 or more years.
I relate to this very well I think we share a lot of the old school ways , nice thoughts nicely written
Thanks wischuett, I appreciate your compliments. ; )
Your poem made me remember my mother. I had a great old school too. With lots of love though. I enjoyed reading you. Excellent.
"To resist an urge to swear
Or my mother would spank my butt"
Do you still remember how many times this happen to you? 🙂
Love old school days. Love this "old school" poem.
Fortunately, not too often, I'm a quick learner. ; ) Thanks for reading m&m.
Very good write, back in the day life was so much easier and so much happier than today, I know - I was there as well.
Not that there weren't tough times back then, but it was much slower paced as I remember. I recall the '60s starting out rather mild, and then towards the end of the '60s it became much more turbulence all over the country. Rock & Roll went through so many changes. Thanks for your note Goldfinch, I do appreciate it.
