Tune: Tyrol
('A man there lived in Galilee')
Acts 8 v.26-40
********
In Samaria an angel
Spoke to Philip, did tell
Him, go south unto desert land
Be guided by God's hand
So he arose, went forth and he
Man travelling did see
Ethiopian official
His carriage did not stall
For Philip to the carriage ran
And met therein the man
Who invited him come aboard
Read Scriptures of the Lord
From Isaiah, about sheep shorn
From him his judgement torn
He desired Philip to explain
And give the message plain
Then Philip his mouth did open
And proclaimed to him then
That those Scriptures of Jesus speak
To all who do Him seek
Then to water they did approach
And so with no reproach
Philip said, 'If with all your heart
You believe, whole not part'
Receive salvation, and you may
Be baptised in this day
He believed, 'Jesus Christ He is
The Son of God', sure this
Was his confession, so they went
To water with intent
Philip him baptised, was not long
And he went home with song

Continually maintaining your high standards Orchi.
Thanks Michael. Bit of a long word there - Ethiopian - takes up 5 syllables!
Good job you didn't need to weave overindividualistically Ethiopian into the poem.
We are not getting into the realms of hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia are we?
You might be right Andy but I can't think - my pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis has kicked in.
There are not many volcanoes in the Midlands that I have come across Michael.
All those syllables and my head is erupting - does that count as a volcano? By the way is syllable the longest word with only one vowel? I suppose you could add an 's'.
An 's' would make it equal to strengths, which is considered to be the longest.
I'll stick with strengths - syllable has two - brains gone to mush.
I started all this! heehee. Can't I write anything without counting the syllables?!
Thanks STEVE for a Great Tune and a Great Tale ! I love the account of the conversion of the Ethiopian Eunuch. The last time I opreached on this passage in Acts my outline was:
1. He came to The House of GOD ~ the Temple in Jerusalem
2. He obtained a copy of The Word of GOD (very expensive I guess) The Prophesy of Isaiah ~ and is reading it in the Chariot WOW ~ When Philip and the Eunuch meet he is in Chapter 53 ~ AMEN ~ If it wasn't in the Bible I would say FICTION !
3. He meets a Man of GOD ~ Philip the Evangelist ~ who introduces Him to:
4. JESUS ~ The Son of GOD
5. He believes and is baptised (by immersion ~ No sprinkling is Acts !) and He becomes A Child of GOD ~ A Christian ! He goes on His way rejoicing and takes the Gospel into AFRICA ~ AMEN
Please pray for the CHURCH in ZIMBABWE ~ Amen
Thanks for caring & sharing ~ BRIAN Your Brother in Christ ~ AMEN
Thanks Brian. Hope you included the 'missing verse' that some versions leave out - verse 37 I think, where the Ethiopian actually says he believes. One of the most important verses I think, and it's left out by some. What's controversial about it, that causes it to be left out sometimes? doh!
Thank you Orchidee. I really enjoyed this poem.
Thanks wc.
Very good one is this Orchi.
Thanks Gold. I won't explain 'eunuch' or I might swoon! But sometimes it just means 'single man, unmarried'.
Another great write! Don't know how you do it, you are so consistently good!
Thanks Fred. Some of it comes from using ye olde Bible version. Not too modern, where things similar to 'Whooppee!' appear. That's killed any eloquence or poetic style. doh!
