CHRISTMAS CRACKERS !

BRIAN & ANGELA

COUPLE PULLING A CRACKER

CHRISTMAS CRACKERS are things you pull

Without them Christmas is very dull

When you pull them ~ they go off bang

Everyone gets a Cracker ~ Wizard Prang !

Each one has a Motto a Joke and a Hat

And also a Present and that is that

When we set our table for Christmas Dinner

Each one gets a Cracker ~ it sure is a winner

Before we have eaten and are sleepy and full

The one on the LEFT is the Cracker you pull

And just to make sure the Party is bright

You then turn and pull ~ the Girl on your RIGHT !

You read out the Motto the Riddle or Joke

Every one groans and the room's full of smoke !

Everyone smiles ~ the MEN put on their Hat

And the LADIES all say ~ NO I'm not wearing that !

It will spoil my coiffure and clash with my dress

And I will end up just looking a mess

The MEN they just sigh and swap with their spouse

And order ~ once more is restored in the house

And what of the presents ? Well what can one say ?

Key Rings and trash ~ that we all throw away !

We BRITS may be poor and affluent lackers

But each year we spend MILLIONS on CRACKERS !

Good write Brian. Some crackers seem to get worse and more trashy over the years. We should buy Harrods ones. Probably have gold watches or something as the gifts in the crackers!

ALAS STEVE AS WITH EVERYTHING ~ You get what you pay for ! I buy expensive ones and my guests are never disappointed ! I like the one where each guest gets a musical note (in the key of C] to toot so with 12 notes (1.5 octaves) you can play most tunes. All my extended family are Musical so they love it ! We all go CRACKERS @ Christmas ! Yours BRIAN

THANKS MICHAEL ~ It seems to me that CHRISTMAS CRACKERS ~along with Paper Hats and Christmas Puddings are Victorian Anachronisms which must be PRESERVED at all costs ~ BRIAN

Thanks FJ6 ~ I was amazed to learn that in the USA ~ Christmas Crackers are not an integral part of the Christmas Diner as they are in the UK ! You don't know what you're missing ! This was the reason I penned this odd ode ~ Yours BRIAN ~ Please add to my FUSION thanks B.

Crackers, wow, how much fun. Thank you Brian for sharing this most spirited poem. Nicely done!

GRACIAS "RR" ~ I chose Rhyming Couplets ~ because they do give pace to a poem in both reading and reciting ! For me CRACKERS are always a fun part at the start of Christmas dinner ~ the awful JOKES and the even worse PRESENTS and there are always LADIES to embarrassed or too sophisticated to wear their allocated hat ! It save the C DINNER from becoming too serious - In my Parents Family (we normally have about 15 round the table) we have already been to Church and acknowledged the meaning of CHRISTMAS ~ so GOD understands if we let our hair down a little ! Then @ 3pm we all listen to the QUEEN who brings us back to reality ! Yours BRIAN

Never heard of Christmas crackers, not even when I lived in Canada, but then I lived in Quebec where French traditions were more common.
While it sounds like a lot of fun, I just wonder how it came to be and how it relates to Christmas which is supposed to be a celebration of the birth of Christ?

Thanks for your comment FRED ~ I'm surprised how many people from the USA etc have never pulled a CHRISTMAS CRACKER ! Like so many "CHRISTMAS THINGS" Trees ~ Lights ~ Cards ~ Crackers etc they were introduced in the Victorian Period ~ The CARDS came in with the Stamps (1840) the Trees with Prince Albert and the CRACKERS about the same time ! They have nothing to do with the INCARNATION ~ they were just to add a bit of CARNIVAL to a rather traditional and formal DINNER ~ OK ~ BRIAN
