Tune: Thornbury
('Thy hand, O God, has guided')
Psalm 44 v.1-8
********
O God, we with our ears heard
Our fathers told the word
What works you did in times old
They them to us retold
How you did drive out heathen
Planted your people then
How you afflicted enemies
How cast out, each one flees
For our fathers possessed not
The land by human lot
Nor did their own sword or arm
Save them, keep them from harm
You showed them your arm, right hand
So they obtained the land
Showed light of your countenance
Your favour, your presence
Youa re my King, O God, sure
Command deliverance for
Jacob, your people Israel
So they your mercies tell
Through you will we all push down
Our enemies, each town
Through your name we will trample
Them down, tread on them all
For I will not trust my bow
My weapons, man's strength-show
Neither shall my sword save me
In the Lord my trust be
But you, Lord, from our enemies
Have saved us, our soul sees
In God we do boast all day long
Praise your name in our song

- Comment from author about the poem: A hymn-poem in 7676 7676 metre. Some of this Psalm is a lament. I've chosen some of the verses that are not so mournful.

THANKS STEVE ~ a GREAT HYMN of Testimony & Assurance ! Thanks for paraphrase on Psalm 44 ! Those us ~ who still have to work for a crust ~ don't do MOURNFUL on a Friday ~ thanks for omitting ! However in the South East we haven't done much work this week ! I still get paid and none of my Students have reached their "sell by date" so the stock is OK ~ Brian
Thanks Brian! Oh woe, I was past my sell by date centuries ago. heehee. If I choose mournful passages, I aim to choose a suitable tune. I mean - not \'Rejoice....\', when we read \'Happy is he, who takes (enemies) little ones and dashes them against the stones\' Murders them! Ait of Psalm 137. Heavy Psalm /Old Testament stuff.
Glad some are happy - kiddies enjoying no school, if they don\'t miss out too long on their education.
Oh woe! but there's no escape from my enemy of KP - me wife! A cue for very mournful poems from me! lol.
in weather like we're having I'm already lamenting - nice one O.
Thanks M. I left out the lamenting bits. Some passages are not on joyful themes, but part of real-life still. Might not be conducive to fit them to jolly tunes. doh! How's the itching? Mine has reduced a bit. A teensy bit warmer then?
Still itching but I've been taking my special blaster tablets (prednisolone) and getting better.
Amen.
Thanks Gold.
