Around the table we sat,
The five regulars,
Ready to play the wonderful game.
The green baize was waiting,
Waiting for the cards.
The cards were spread,
Single cards were selected,
The lowest picked sat out.
The cards were shuffled,
Then dealt,
Silence filled the room
As the brains went into gear.
The dealer spoke,
“No bid”
“No Bid”
“Two clubs” and a knock,
A knock on the table.
The others looked surprised
“No Bid”
“Two diamonds”
“No bid”
“Two no trumps”
“No Bid”
“No Bid”
“No Bid”
The game starts,
The lead is made,
The dealer spreads his cards,
Cards on the table.
The bidder plays a card from table,
The third plays a card,
The bidder takes the trick,
And the next,
Then loses the next eleven,
Six down on the hand.
“Why did you bid two clubs!”
Shouted the dealer,
“Well I had two clubs in my hand”,
“But why did you knock?”
“There was a fly on the table”,
“Do you know how to play bridge!”,
“No I just thought I would try it”,
“But you need to know the rules”,
“But there are no rules,
Bridges just need crossing”.
“Well you crossed me!
The hand was lost!”
“Maybe it is under the bridge,
I’ll help you find it”
“Bridge is a game”,
“Well if it’s a game
Why are you so annoyed?”,
“Well it’s a serious game!”
“If it is so serious, why do you play it,
Games are meant to be enjoyed”,
“I do enjoy it!!” he shouted,
“Why are you shouting?”
“Because we lost!!!”
“But games can be lost”
“But you lost this one for us”
“Don’t include me,
You are the one shouting,
I am quite happy,
Do you want another game?”

- Comment from author about the poem: I play bridge about once a month and one of my friends asked me to write a poem about it. The song is a classic of course and the Choir that I am in sang it in a Concert we held last night.

Oh lol, a fine write Gold. I only know Pontoon or ''21' really.
Thank Orchi, just a bit of fun really.
Yes Hood it is the same but it would take a great deal of explaining to Orchi.
Why, yes of course. Orchi don't know these things - too technical! heehee
I've never played but I do see a group who play regularly and get so engrossed and serious about it to the point where it seems to me there is no enjoyment - perhaps that why it doesn't appeal to me = fine write which I enjoyed by the way.
Some do take it so seriously, about 40 years ago I played it regularly but even then I still looked on it as a game. I was brought up in a family that played cards and the overriding rule was "If you start arguing about the game the cards will go on the fire" - I have always looked upon card games in that way.
They've gone over-board with the board game of Monopoly now. There's skyscrapers in it now too! If you land on an opponent's property that has one, you'll probably go bankrupt!
A few years ago my son sat next to AG on a flight and although he thought he knew him from somewhere didn't recognise him. They started talking and Art asked my son what he did for a living - they chatted a while and then my son asked 'And what about you?' Art replied 'Oh I sing a bit'. It was only then that the penny dropped.
It is amazing when you meet people out of context and you don't recognise them.
Many years ago when we lived in Kent Mike Harding used to come quite regularly to our local theatre and you always had MH lookalikes turn up; one day we were walking towards the theatre and another one was walking towards us - it was in fact Mike Harding and it was a pleasure to have a chat with him - nice bloke.
I met Basil Brush once. Does that count as VIP?!
Gold,
This is a great Sunday morning! We’re off to a great start!
I enjoyed your poem,
Simon & Garfunkel, and
all the wonderful lighthearted
comments!
It is a wonderful
Sunday morning, indeed!
Enjoy this beautiful day!
All the best...
~Laura~
Thank you Laura, may your Sunday be filled with joy and laughter.
Thanks ANDY ~ "Bridge" is my favourite S & G Song ~ made my Sunday ! Which CHOIR are you in ~ I heard it sung recently ~ The last verse always gives me GOOSE PIMPLES ! I learned to play Bridge on a CRUISE (very Middle Class for a Scouser !) I agree any group I play with takes it all far too seriously and always insist on the rules ~ spoils the fun of tapping & rapping ~ It's only a GAME ! The same is true of scrabble which I generally win because I have the names of six million Oganic Compounds to draw on although CHLOROPHYLL and HAEMOGLOBIN are a little too verbose for SCRABBLE but I have got INSULIN & ENZYME (on a triple word score) and of course XYLENE etc. Seriousness and the hatred of being beaten (especially by a GIRL) is also the downside of CHESS. When we had a Yoko Ono Exhibition (she would ring from the States & Chat !) one of the dynamic exhibits was an ALL WHITE Chess set ! I played with several people but after about 10 or more moves we had to agree to mutually surrender and PEACE was declared ! This was YOKOS intention ! All she was saying "Is give PEACE a chance !" I like playing GARDEN CHESS with real big pieces ! Yours BRIAN
Thank you Brian, I sing and was a founder member of Evesham Community Choir, I was Chair up until last year so that I could devote more time to Joyce, i still sing in it though.
I have seen and played against people like you have mentioned, I am convinced they do not enjoy it as much as those of us who do not take it too seriously.
OOOOOOOhhhh the pressure of card games! "Games" and "Serious" don't seem to go together.......
Very true Lorna.
It seems to me that card players are very smart..... Jay used to take to play Pinochle and it certainly seems to take a particular kind of ability to concentrate and hold all the information required in the brain cells! It's probably great for keeping mental fitness...... perhaps I should worry if I'm not very good at it!
Don't you worry Lorna, your brain cells are being exercised with much more important things like Poetry.
Whether good or bad it comes too easily to me........ I thought the brain only grows when hard work is involved...........
Don't you believe it, every day we are expanding our brains with the life around us, I am still seeing new things and my brain is ancient!
Whew...... ok so I can be a bit lazy..........
I'm not a card player, but a great write and song Andy.
Thank you AP. Much appreciated.
I played backgammon so long ago now, I think it's a side of bacon!
Not quite as the rind gets in the way!
