Last Call
Trials and tribulations
Of reaching teenage years
Suddenly your freedom
The source of many tears
So you know it all
No need for school
And you want it all
Live by your own rules
Beer, your new found friend
Getting drunk is your right
And who cares if
You end up in a fight
Bars are there for a reason
To spend your paycheck
Only to end up behind bars
Then you’ll say, “What the heck?”
Now it’s Saturday night
And you need a drink
Last call for alcohol
Better get two you think
Come to think of it
Buy another round
Drinks are on you because you’re
Everyone’s best friend in town
Why the dependence
Upon so frequent alcohol
Someday you’ll find your life
Waking up to its last call
Alcohol is not your enemy
But it’s also not your friend
Better get control of it
Before it does you in
If you’re smart you’ll wake up
Walking through a sober door
It’s just not the same
As it was before

Many of us have been there - it's part of the ritual of maturing - the key to life is learning from it and moving onwards. Super work AP
Yes Michael, growing up is never easy. It hasn't changed much since I was young myself. I didn't have a drinking problem, I did smoke some pot while young, but eventually grew out of that. I think maturity finally catches up with most people. My poem here is about those who come out of their teenage years as professional party players, and they continue on to drink themselves into alcoholism as a life long problem. I can see having a few drinks in the course of a weekend, but many don't know when to stop. Thank you for reading and your compliment.
AP,
An awesome write accompanied by an appropriate song to accentuate it!
I can’t say I relate BUT I know someone who can and hasn’t learned from his past! The sad thing is he’s not the only one affected by it! The whole family suffers! It’s like walking on eggshells! Devastating for everyone...especially for him!

Thank you Laura, I didn't even touch on your point of how it effects the family. That's another whole side of the issue. And I imagine it is like walking on eggshells. Thanks for reading and your comment.
A fine write AP. On a light note - I told 'em to add water to it!
Thanks orchi, maybe not as much fun, but water is healthier.
Super write AP, looking at our past we need to learn from it and most surely have, it is called growing up.
Thanks Andy, yes most have learned, but it seems that some refuse to put a limit on their use of alcohol.
good advise my friend, but will they take it
Some will, some won't Ron. All we can do is be there for them when they look for support. Thanks for reading and your compliment.
Hi AP - kind of sad that fine line between being carefree and young and then slightly pathetic and self destructive..... it's hard to pin down exactly when that happens! Lucky for me I guess that 2 sips of hard stuff put me out so "one less thing" as Forrest Gump would say.....
For some Lorna, education comes easy. Others not so. But thankfully you're a fast learner. Thanks for reading.
Nothing "learned" about it....... I simply got sick!
That's a lesson in itself Lorna.
If I had drank (drunk?) the way I smoked cigarettes I'd be dead...... I quit cigarettes eons ago but I was up to 4 packs a day...... can you imagine the money these days!!
You'd probably go broke. I'm not a smoker, but I think its up to $10 or $12 a pack? I have a co-worker who must smoke at least two packs a day now. And that's after two operations on his jaw and throat. He now has less than a year to live. And still he smokes. Very sad.
