In the GIDEON MAGAZINE there are always Testimonies
of People who have been saved from Suicide through
reading a Gideon BIBLE and people who have found
Salvation ! In each Gideon Bible there is a list of verses
people can read to answer their situation. The Gideons
were in New York for a Conference during 9-11 and the
Authorities allowed them access to the distressed and
bereaved after the Collapse of the Twin Towers ~ AMEN

That was very informative. The Gideons are very courageous people. Not only does it take courage to represent Jesus, but to take Bibles where they have taken them is a true testimony in itself.

Amen - It actually does bring a quick smile to my face whenever I am in a hotel, and I open the drawer. I think, 'Wow, some people still care enough to carry the word of God. This very book may have saved the person's life who stayed in this room before me'.

A fine write Brian but I must admit it's a subject about which I have mixed feelings. I have no objection to the practice but I just wonder if books promoting humanism were left in hotels etc what the reaction would be.

I guess it is because the BIBLE is universally regarded as a GOOD BOOK and suitable for didtribution in Schools ~ Prisons ~ Care Homes etc. Humanism has many books but not a single Universally Accepted Book ~ like the BIBLE. The distribution dooes meet with and no Gideon Bibles are placed in Hotels ~ Schools ~ Hospitals ~ Prisons etc without the approval of the Management ~ OK. The BIBLE has been replaced historically by MEIN KAMPF (Third Reich 1933-45 ) and more recently by MAO TSE TUNG's Little Red Book in China ! In Schools Children (Year 7 ~ 11 or 12 years old have a right to refuse and Parents to object ! GIDEONS do work on a principle of free will (to accept or reject) in both distribution and placement ~ OK ~ Yours BRIAN.
I fully appreciate and accept what you are saying Brian but coming back to my point, if there were such a universally accepted tome, I still wonder what reception it would get. Travelling quite a bit both here and overseas I must add that there seems to be fewer GBs in evidence in hotels these days than I can recall in the past.
Thanks MICHAEL ! HUMANISM as I understand it teaches "This Life is all there is" so we should seek to improve ourselves and our Community and strive to leave things better than we found them. People like the FOOTS were Intellectuals and able to reason that God is a Myth invented by superstitious and ignorant People to compensate for their poverty and inability to explain the Physical Universe in which they survived ! All the Humanists I have met have been Intellectual ~ Philosophical ~ Content with their lot and saw no need for God or an afterlife and tried to make the best of the life they enjoyed ! Humanism suits such People ~ who compared with the average are very privileged. The average seem to need a GOD & Religion to enable them to survive so they invent Gods and appease them with worship and ritual ~ man is a Spiritual Animal and is always seeking to know God ! My argument is that Judeo-Christianity ~ as recorded in the BIBLE ~ is GOD reaching out to Man and making contact ! So my belief in GOD was initially established by FAITH which leads on to a day-by-day experience of Fellowship with God. I guess because there are over 2 billion practising Christians (in all walks of life) and we have this unifying Book ~ the BIBLE ~ GIDEONS INTERNATIONAL is feasible. I agree with you a similar move by HUMANISTS would not get off the ground because it does not have a Universal foundation and acceptance like CHRISTIANITY ~ Witchcraft is another example of a Movement that would be shown the door. I apologise if Christianity seems to have Privilege and Entree where other "Beliefs" do not but Judeo-Christianity has thousands of Years Head Start and very deep roots and Foundations ~ OK ~ BRIAN
