Be the cuts or tattoos self inflicted they find little social acceptance. Disfigurement in some societies is well accepted and encouraged be it scarification or tattoos and piercings. Never the less most of this is not self inflicted but done by a professional. I hear the meaning in this poem and it is sad for much of this self art is out of pain. Well written
