I know exactly what you mean! Much of my little town seems like a ghost town, it\'s really quite sad. Great write!

Oohh Petula is feisty! Now, now Orchi, you will bring on a swoon! lol. A fine write Brian.
I might have been downtown in 1967 - well, a bit young to be out at night then - but a classical \'nice\' sort of song. I gave up following the pop charts about 1985 I reckon!

I do shop a little on line. But mostly in store. Because people need jobs. I appreciate your attention to this subject. Also, I hate the self serve registers. I never use them.

And at least in the States, the closed shops represent a lot of misery behind the scenes for the people now out of work........

A sad reflection of the times. Shops are continually closing in my town but we are lucky in that they seem to be snapped up fairly quickly - it is a bit of a tourist town with mostly privately owned shops of the arty farty variety and very vibrant. Pity this isn\'t the case everywhere.

Agree wholeheartedly Brian - how sad to see city and even small-town shops all boarded up. An apt and well written acrostic.

Mio Caro Amico BRIAN,
Bellissime quatrains dā€™amore!
Beautiful love quatrains!
I enjoyed all five...
and a perfect selection
of song! Whitney Houston
was an incredible singer! This particular rendition of ā€œI Will Always Love Youā€ is phenomenal!
I remember the VH-1 broadcast of the production DIVAS LIVE in 1999 at the Beacon theater where Whitney sang that unforgettable rendition of the song!

Ah - - one of my all time favs of John Betjeman\'s talent for writing fun-poetry is this cleverly rhymed ode to a favoured young lady. I have often read this out loud just for the perfection of tone and metre. Thanks for sharing it Brian and all the best for your lecture this evening.

One of my favourite poets as well. Whren I read his work I can hear his voice - I have an anthology of his works on disc which I often put on in the studio. Just one comment to make - whilst he was excellent his work is nearly all in the same vein - I wish he had explored different form more often.

John Betjeman is my favourite poet.
A few years ago I was given a challenge to write a poem with only twenty words with a literary inspiration, this is what I wrote:

At last I was married
To Miss Joan Hunter Dunn.
And a little while later
She bore us a son.

Check the spelling of Betjeman it is spelt in three different ways on your write, the one in the penultimate line is the correct spelling

A very rich and clever language is Cockney-speak Brian and thanks for the amusing examples you gave in this tale of rhyming for the reason of hiding what traders were saying in the days back when. A good video too.
