But did he hit you...
Arvy said:

It takes great courage to share your story with an abusive relationship. Society blames those who get abused thinking it\'s easy to just walk away when they\'re oblivious of how difficult and painful the whole deal is. My heart goes to anyone in pain and can\'t speak out. Thank you for this beautiful poem Hannah!

But did he hit you...

‘Like I had somewhere to go’ is, for me, one of several key lines, Hannah.
Before Covid it was a big issue here in Oz and my guess is elsewhere too. With Covid lockdowns…….
Sometimes my empathy module gets unplugged or something, so I haven’t much sympathy for socialisation arguments which would posit that women have no choice in partner selection.
However if I take it up at the sharp point of crisis, then I know the situation re alternative accommodation is well nigh impossible - property prices astronomical, rents similarly very high; government benefits far too low and a dire shortage of women’s shelters.
Good cause to shout about.

This is powerful Hannah.
\"a society that primes us
To fawn and to freeze
To avoid confrontation
And just people please\".
That\'s an amazing verse!
The mixed messages that women receive from society do so much damage. Told to act/look a certain way, then condemned for doing so. A change is long overdue.

steamy, daringly so
a cute write,
we\'re all wonderfully different, aren\'t we
some like to shake the tree
and in the unfurling confusion
find their worth, in that capacity to cultivate chaos;
thanks for sharing

Hannah, the interpretation is ALWAYS up to the reader... But you know that. The most important thing in existence as far as I am concerned is passion. It can be miserable, painful, tear your soul apart from unrequited longing, jealousy, and exhaustion. You nailed it for me.

Being no great fan of love poetry, I’m pleased this is about lust if it is focused on that area at all.
A key description for me would be obsession, and this could be with many or any of life’s varied aspects. The only flaw with that argument is that there exists a certain personification there….must have been lust......and power....Aaah!!

Excellent! Makes me think of a time when I was in love with someone who I knew wasn\'t good for me but I couldn\'t end it. A fine bit of writing here Hannah🙂

Sounds like soulmates to me Hannah empathy between friends. Not sure but have a hunch that entanglement has a function within the molecular biology of the brain!

You can only do just so much for someone when they won\'t do for themselves what they need to do. Eventually the time comes to move on and wish them well. Believing in oneself is key to having faith in oneself. Great write Hannah 👍

\"The beauty of destruction
Is that the brokenness leaves room
For light to find its way in
Allowing seeds of love to bloom\"

These lines are truly amazing and insightful! This is outstanding work Hannah.

I\'m really liking your style Hannah. Your poems are concise and direct yet never feel rushed. You right about things so relatable that the reader can easily put themself in your place and feel the emotion that flows from every line. Excellent write🙂

Marionette
Heart of Babel said:

I think one of the most interesting things to me is the word love in conjunction with the word conditional. Obviously the dictionary has various definitions to describe the word love, but when it comes to that of the heart, I always feel like there is only one. To which you either have love or you have not.

I think that is why when the conditional element gets added, it is so powerful and impacting to my understanding. Because at the introduction of condition, love is dissolved. It then becomes a performance piece, exactly like the theme of your poem, a marionette, a calculated manipulation to meet the demands of self-service. It is a really appalling and a messed up thing to have to experience, utterly terrible, in fact.

Just the stark contrast, where my idea of love is entirely based on selflessness, the deliberate intention and choice to be selfless for another, sacrificial to a degree, the marionette is otherworldly to that paradigm. It is a radical and quite traumatic shift.

Needless to say, what your writing portrays is near to perfection. Absolutely superb.

Thanks for the reminder Hannah, It\'s been some time.....
You will probably (if you haven’t already) come across the Stanford Prison Experiment.
Both this and the Milgram have some commonalities and are the subject of much debate with respect to their validity, as is the mode within the social sciences which see debate and intellectual conflict a part of their rationale.
However History (another of the social sciences and in many ways the most interesting) provides evidence that at least the conclusions from these experiments have some validity. People have this innate desire to agree within their group. Conflict is inhibited there. They also submit to authority far more than they would care to believe…..and so on…
