From my childhood I can remember my family going down to Hastings ( used to live in Kent) with my Uncle \'erb (the H was never pronounced) in his car. On the way back we stopped at a park to have a picnic. Some whelks had been bought and my uncle started to eat one but couldn\'t chew it so he took his false teeth out of his mouth put the whelk between them and said \"Now eat the bloody thing!\" - it is a memory that is always in my mind.
