The reason this poem affected me so much is that my mom was suffering from dementia, my dad\'s best friend\'s wife had Alzheimers and he cared for her for years, my sister has MS and her daughter is always there for her, and my sister in law\'s husband is in early stages of dementia.
I think it is time that we recognize the incredible amount of love and effort made by the care-givers. These afflictions are as hard if not harder for them then they are for the people suffering. That is why I think Goldfinch is a saint. I admire and salute him.

Goldfinch, I do not cry easily. I think the last time I cried was when my mom died. But reading your poem tonight (yes, it is still Thursday here), I had a hard time to hold these tears back. The way you take care of her...you are a saint. I do worry that this will happen to us, either me or my wife, and how will I react if it is her? Will she take care of me? I want to be able to read it again in the future, so I am making it a favorite.
